Christian Kabasele has confirmed that he has been holding talks “since last year” with Watford about extending his contract at Vicarage Road. The 28-year-old centre-back has been a key member of the Hornets squad since he joined from Genk in summer 2016.
Indeed, Kabasele’s influence on the team was reflected by the fact that the side had picked up a draw in the five league games he had started this season and lost when he was a substitute.
That run ended when Chelsea picked up a 2-1 win in Hertfordshire at the weekend, to leave the Hornets sat at the foot of the table on five points from 11 games – six points adrift of Everton in the final position of safety.
It has been a disastrous start to the campaign as Watford have become the first team to fail to win any of their opening 10 games in a top-flight on two occasions, having previously started as badly in 2006-07.
They ended up being relegated that year, but Kabasele is hopeful that Quique Sanchez Flores’ current crop of players can turn things around with over two-thirds of the season remaining.
And the Belgian has an added incentive to help the Hornets avoid the drop because he is desperate to secure another contract with the club.
He said: “Since last year, we’ve been in talks to renew. The objective is to stay as long as possible at Watford and in the Premier League. It’s so difficult to set foot [in the PL], so it’s hard to want to change.”
Kabasele also stressed his desire to try and force his way into the Belgium national team ahead of Euro 2020 next summer.
He added: “It’s an objective for anyone who can be picked. Everyone dreams of playing in a tournament and it can be the consecration of this golden generation. I’m working towards that and to prove my value to the manager.”
