Kane talks up Spurs’ top-four hopes

Harry Kane insists it is too early to rule Tottenham out of contention for a top-four spot despite sitting eight points off the pace. Tottenham already have a mountain to climb if they are to finish in the top four for a fifth consecutive season following Sunday’s loss to Liverpool.
Kane, who scored twice in the midweek victory over Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, nodded Spurs into the lead with less than a minute played at Anfield but second-half goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah earned Liverpool a 2-1 win.
It stretches Tottenham’s winless run on the road in the Premier League to 11 matches and has piled further pressure on boss Mauricio Pochettino.
They never really looked in the game, despite breaking the deadlock early in the encounter, and desperately need to get back to winning ways when they head to Everton on Saturday.
Kane was left feeling frustrated at their failure to compete with the table-toppers and insists they can’t take any positives from the clash. “Whenever you lose, you can never be encouraged. We battled, but you expect that at this level in every game. It’s disappointing being 1-0 up at half-time, being ahead and not being able to see it through. I don’t think [there were positives],” Kane said.
But the England captain believes they can recover from a poor start to the season and has refused to rule them out of contention for a top-four finish.
He added: “Not at this stage. There’s a lot of football to be played. A winning run has got to be the aim, but we’ve got to turn it around quick. When you’re in form like this, where you can’t get a run of wins together, it’s difficult. It’s down to us to stick together, to do more and make sure we come out of it.”
