Former Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu has tipped his teenage compatriot Alex Iwobi to enjoy a great career at the club following his excellent recent form.
The 19-year-old Nigeria international has broken into the Gunners’ starting side in recent weeks and in their last three Premier League matches, he has scored twice and assisted another two.
After only featuring intermittently until the last month, Iwobi’s outstanding form has surprised many, but not Kanu who stated that he was convinced of his ability after witnessing him perform in pre-season.
Kanu was quoted by African Football as saying: “He has the talent, he can do wonders in his career. He has grabbed his own chance and he is doing well. I’m happy for them.
“Age is on his side and with focus, the sky will just be his stepping stone. I am not surprised about Iwobi’s rapid progress after I saw what he could do during Arsenal pre-season.”
Although Iwobi has predominantly featured out wide, where his pace and directness has troubled opposition full backs, he also impressed from a more central middle position against West Ham on Saturday.
His versatility and varied skill-set have, therefore, made him an extremely useful option for Arsene Wenger and the Gunners boss will perhaps be disappointed that he didn’t introduce him earlier in the season.
After netting his first Premier League goal against Everton last month, Iwobi followed that up with another strike against Watford the following game and his eye for goal is emphasised by his 71% shot accuracy.
Iwobi, who has been contracted to Arsenal since 2004, will no doubt be looking to further cement his place in the side from now until the end of the season.
