According to Glasgow World, A recent development at FC Twente seems to have increased Rangers’ chances of securing a star on a cheap deal as they push to sign a left back in the final days of the January transfer window.
For the Ibrox club, left back is presently a position of uncertainty. Borna Barisic has six months left on his deal, and champions Galatasaray are supposedly leading the race to sign Ridvan Yilmaz. Meanwhile, speculation about Yilmaz returning to Turkey has been swirling around.
According to TeamTalk, FC Twente star Gijs Smal is one player the Rangers recruitment team is reportedly considering. Since joining the Dutch team in 2020, the 26-year-old left back has made 87 league appearances in the top division while tallying four goals.
With his current contract set to expire in June, he may be spending his final season with the Eredivisie team. He is currently in his fourth season there.
The defender is reportedly highly regarded by FC Twente, according to reports from Voetbal International, but his future is still up in the air because he declined the opportunity to sign a new, long-term contract.

With back-to-back victories for Celtic, Smal has Europa League experience and could be a valuable addition to Philippe Clement’s team as they look to win the Scottish Premiership again. Contrary reports from The National state that the Gers have other targets in mind in addition to Smal, and others assert that Rangers are well-positioned to sign the player to a cheap contract before the window closes.
Rangers have already brought in Wolves sensation Fabio Silva on a season-long loan, and they are getting closer to finalizing the signing of Mohamed Diomande, a midfielder.
