Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool are back on track following a woeful start to the year after seeing off Tottenham on Saturday evening.
The Reds came into their game with Spurs at Anfield off the back of 2-0 loss to Hull the previous week, which was the club’s fifth defeat in all competitions since the beginning of the year.
Despite the Reds’ poor run of results in 2017, Klopp’s men put in an assured performance against Tottenham as two goals from Sadio Mane in the first half secured a 2-0 victory at Anfield, which sent Liverpool back into fourth place.
Klopp’s side now have a 16-day wait to play their next league match, an away outing against struggling champions Leicester on Monday 27 February, but the German coach believes his players can use that time to improve their form further.
“Now we are back in this race and we have to use this situation,” Klopp said.
“Even though we didn’t perform fantastically in January we are still in a really good position in the league.
“Really it’s not a shame (about the length of break). I love football, but I have no problems with a few days where we can now really train.
“The boys will have a little bit of a rest and then we will start a pre-season, that’s how we understand it.
“We want to use the time and hopefully everybody can see that, it would make sense.”
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, meanwhile, was at a loss to explain his team’s showing at Anfield, saying his side lacked “aggression” against Liverpool.
“It’s important to realise that you always need to compete in the Premier League and always give your best,” Pochettino said.
“For different reasons that we need to analyse, the team, collectively, didn’t show.
“It’s not about quality, because we have quality, it’s aggression to try to win the three points.
“We need to be clever, to be strong, to analyse, to find out why and to change.”
