Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was not happy with the goal his side conceded against Villarreal on Thursday night and particularly with left-back Alberto Moreno.
The Reds more than matched the Spanish outfit at the El Madrigal on Thursday and it seemed set to end goalless between Marcelino’s side and Klopp’s team.
However, it was the former who had the last laugh as Liverpool paid the price for a lapse in concentration late on.
A ball over the top found the tricky Denis Suarez who beat Kolo Toure for pace down the right-hand side and found former Atletico Madrid man Adrian Lopez.
The goal from Adrian puts Villarreal firmly in the front seat, but if anything has been proven this season by Liverpool in Europe is that they certainly have a mean record at Anfield.
And Klopp is confident ahead of the return leg next week, although he was angry with the manner of the goal conceded.
“Of course I’m not too happy with the goal we conceded in the last second,” Klopp told BT Sport after the game. “Counter attacking in the 92nd minute makes not much sense but it is only the first leg. It is 1-0 and they have to come to Anfield where we know how strong we are. We had our moments, we defended really good. This race is not over.
“If we had enough players in around the box it was no problem but they played this one chip ball over Kolo, I don’t know where Alberto was in this moment but that was the only big mistake we made in this game and they scored with it.
“90 minutes played, 95, we will play at Anfield and that is a different game then.”
Moreno was heavily criticised by fans on social media after the goal after he left Toure completely exposed by himself at the back.
The Spaniard was nearly a hero down the other side of the pitch after flying through on goal, but he failed to stay calm and lashed an effort over Sergio Asjeno’s goal, with Jordon Ibe placed better alongside him to get the first goal of the game.
