Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is remaining grounded despite seeing his side make an almost “impossible” start to the season. Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City means Liverpool have accumulated 34 points from a possible 36 in the Premier League this season and they head into the international break eight points clear of their nearest rivals in the standings.
Many people are already believing the Reds’ 30-year wait for a top-flight title is coming to an end this season, a suggestion that is gathering momentum given they have already come up against all of their traditional big-six rivals as well as Leicester over the opening months of the campaign.
Klopp is certainly finding it hard to comprehend just what a good start to the season it has been, but he is keen to remind everyone that it is still just the beginning and he is expecting plenty of twists and turns to come. “It’s just the start, that’s how it is, everybody knows that,” Klopp told the club’s website. “If you would have told me that you can have 34 points [at this stage of the season], wow! It’s pretty much impossible but we did it.”
The international break may have come at a good time for Liverpool, as Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are both nursing ankle injuries and have not gone away with their countries as a result.
Both players will be hoping to use the next couple of weeks to get back up to full fitness and Klopp has his fingers crossed that the other members of his squad on international duty will return unscathed ahead of their trip to Crystal Palace later this month. “Now the boys go for the last international break of the year. They have to come back healthy. You saw it how intense it was [against City],” the German added. “Hopefully they all come back healthy and then we go to Crystal Palace.”
Liverpool have done the double over Palace in each of the last two seasons and punters may choose to use their free bet to back the Reds to leave Selhurst Park with all three points once again on November 23.
