Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler claims he ‘knows for a fact’ that N’Golo Kante was eager to join Arsenal before eventually signing for Chelsea last summer.
The France international has been a sensation at Stamford Bridge so far this season, after completing a £32million switch from Premier League champions Leicester City.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has previously admitted that he has tried and failed to sign the 26-year-old on two seperate occasions.
Fowler has criticised the Gunners boss for not getting a deal over the line ahead of the 2016/17 campaign, insisting he was certain Kante was ready to make it happen.
“He [Wenger] knows that players who should have been signed last summer weren’t, and that has cost them,” Fowler said in his Daily Mirror column.
“I know for a fact that N’Golo Kante wanted to go to Arsenal, Wenger wanted him, but the deal didn’t get done.
“I’m not saying it fell through because of his wages. But it fell through because of his wages.”
Kante is the bookies’ favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award ahead of his Chelsea team-mate Eden Hazard, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez also making the shortlist.
