In May, Carlo Ancelotti’s team defeated Liverpool in the Champions League final to win their 14th UCL trophy.
The La Liga powerhouses also defeated Chelsea and City en route to the final game. Meanwhile, they also took home the La Liga title before their Champions League triumph in Paris.
However, City were awarded the team of the year award while Madrid came in third – even behind Liverpool.
The decision did not sit well with Kroos, who took to Twitter to question City’s win. “3rd best team in 2021/22 – happy Real Madrid?” Kroos tweeted.

The German certainly believes his team deserved the honor, but the Spaniards had many other reasons to celebrate at the illustrious ceremony.
Karim Benzema was crowned the footballer of the year after his sensational campaign, while Thibaut Courtois was recognised as the best goalkeeper.
Benzema’s placement reflected the 44 goals in 46 appearances he scored last term. In 12 Champions League appearances, the Frenchman scored 15 goals.
