La Liga “to take Fifa to court over 48-team World Cup expansion”

La Liga are set to take legal action against Fifa after the world governing body voted to expand the World Cup in 2026 to 48 teams, according to reports.

It was announced on Tuesday that Fifa officials have unanimously agreed the expansion of the World Cup during a vote held in Zurich.

Gianni Infantino was appointed Fifa president last year after Sepp Blatter was removed from his position, having been banned from football for six years for making a “disloyal payment” of £1.3m to ex-Uefa president Michel Platini.

There was new hope for football upon Infantino’s appointment and football’s governing body publicly stated the need for greater ‘transparency’ following the 2015 corruption scandal.

However, the decision to increase the World Cup in 2026 to 48 teams has been met disapproval among critics fearing the tournament will become less competitive. The newly formatted competition will comprise 16 groups of three teams, from each of which two nations will progress to the last 32 stage. There will be 80 matches in total over 32 days and the number of participating players will double.

According to Sky Sports, La Liga are set to take action against Fifa due to their changes to the World Cup as they claim they were not consulted by the world governing body before Monday’s vote.

Infantino was aware that Europe’s major leagues had to be approached to discuss his planned changes as they affect professional footballers, it is claimed.

Sky quote a senior source at the Spanish League as having said: “We are not happy at all. We are providing extra players but we have not been consulted. We are looking at ways in which we can challenge today’s decision.”
