Frank Lampard has urged Manchester United to appoint Jose Mourinho as manager.
The Portuguese has been heavily linked with the managerial position at Old Trafford, and, although United’s form has improved recently under Louis Van Gaal, Lampard believes that the club’s hierarchy should still look to bring Mourinho in.
Lampard enjoyed much success under Mourinho’s tutelage at Chelsea and believes that United need to make a high-profile managerial appointment with Pep Guardiola set to take charge of City.
Lampard told Manchester Evening News: “If I’m in charge at United and I see Pep Guardiola going to Manchester City, Jose would be top of my list. Jose will get the best out of the players there. He will recruit top players.
“They are not happy with where they are at. It’s a good option for both United and Jose. It’s a good fit.”
There is a concern in some quarters that Mourinho’s philosophy doesn’t tally with United’s heritage, particularly with regards to playing young players, but the 53-year-old is a proven winner and will be eager to re-establish himself after his second spell at Chelsea concluded in disastrous fashion.
United have struggled with regards to attacking ingenuity for much of the campaign, as demonstrated by the fact that they have only created 232 chances in the Premier League.
Van Gaal’s side take on West Bromwich Albion today, with United still possessing an outside chance of winning the Premier League title this season.
United are also still in contention in both the FA Cup and the Europa League, meaning that there is a chance that this could prove to be a successful season for the club, despite Van Gaal having been heavily criticised at times.
