Japan captain Michael Leitch is adamant they will “get stronger” after their 26-3 World Cup quarter-final loss against South Africa. The host nation have won many fans at the tournament, having defeated both Ireland and Scotland on their way to the last-eight. However, they were unable to repeat the surprise 2015 World Cup win against the Springboks in Tokyo on Sunday. Makazole Mapimpi’s try put South Africa in front, before a Yu Tamura penalty hauled the hosts back into the tie as they trailed 5-3 at the break. It was one-way traffic after the interval as tries from Faf de Klerk and Mapimpi plus Handre Pollard’s 11 points booked them a semi-final spot against Wales. Despite the disappointment of losing, a defiant Leitch said: “Rugby is all about creating moments and taking opportunities. We had a few opportunities to capitalise on but unfortunately South Africa kicked us out. “Congratulations to the South African team, they played their A game and played it very well. “I’m extremely proud of what this team have done. To represent Asia and the two-tier countries, I’m sure they’ll be proud of us as well. Japan is only going to get stronger.”
