Liverpool Condemn ‘Vile Chants’ Aimed At Them By Chelsea Fans

Following the Tuesday Tuesday match between the two teams at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool joined Chelsea in denouncing the singing of songs about tragedies by the crowd.

As part of the most recent string of heinous behavior at football games. Some Chelsea supporters sang the chants intended to mock Hillsborough victims and survivors.

A statement released by Liverpool read: “We know the impact these vile chants have on those who continue to suffer as a result of football tragedies. For their sake, this has to stop.”

It follows similar communications to fan groups this season from Manchester City, Manchester United, and Leeds United.

Songs that use phrases like “always the victims” and “murderers.” And make reference to the 1989 tragedy in which 97 people died are becoming more and more common in the top division.

After the match, Chelsea released a statement to their official website, Chelseafc.com condemning the incident at the stadium and said: “Chelsea FC condemns the inappropriate chants heard from some home fans during this evening’s game. Hateful chanting has no place in football and we apologise to anyone who has been offended by them.”

The Premier League also released a statement regarding the tragedy chants by Chelsea supporters.

The statement goes thus: “The Premier League condemns the tragedy chanting heard at tonight’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool.

“We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and are seeking to address it as a priority.”

With 97 fans wrongfully murdered, the Hillsborough tragedy stands to be the worst sporting disaster in UK history.

In 2016, a jury decided that match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield was “responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence” following a traumatic 27-year fight by the victims’ and survivors’ families.
