Trent Alexander-Arnold has every right to pursue a move to Real Madrid, according to Paul Merson, who questions how Liverpool fans have treated him.
Real Madrid has been keeping an eye on Alexander-Arnold for the past two years, as his Liverpool deal remains uncertain. There have been numerous changes in the Liverpool hierarchy in recent years, and the right-back has thus been allowed to enter the final six months of his contract.
For months, the Spanish media has speculated that Alexander-Arnold will turn down any offers to extend his Liverpool contract in order to pursue a new adventure at the Bernabeu.
Liverpool fans were shocked on Tuesday when David Ornstein confirmed that Madrid is ‘trying to seal a deal’ to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer.

Liverpool fans are obviously disappointed and heartbroken to see the 26-year-old move closer to Madrid. They expected him to follow in Steven Gerrard’s footsteps and lead the club to victory, but this is increasingly improbable.
Merson, a former Arsenal player, has responded to supporters who have criticized Alexander-Arnold on social media. He believes that moving to the Spanish capital is the best next move for Alexander-Arnold, regardless of the controversy it will generate.
“I’m not sure what the problem is. Trent’s performance at Liverpool has been amazing. “He’s won everything in the game at Liverpool, and he’s going to leave for free,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He has not arrived as a £60 million flop. He’s worked his way up the ranks, joined the team, and performed admirably. And it’s Real Madrid. Do you understand what I mean?
“Look at Antony; he was bought by Manchester United for £80 million and is currently on loan, and no one is saying anything.
