Liverpool Handed Major Injury Scare As Key Player Withdraws From National Team

Ryan Gravenberch has reportedly withdrawn from the Netherlands national team squad to hand Liverpool a major scare ahead of their title run-in.

Despite joining the Dutch squad for the upcoming two-leg Nations League quarterfinal against Spain, the 22-year-old midfielder sustained a knock during the Reds’ Carabao Cup final loss to Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday. It has now been decided that he will be permitted to return to Liverpool for additional evaluation on the situation.

According to The Mirror, the Dutch national team said in a statement on Wednesday night: “Ryan Gravenberch has left the Oranje’s training camp this evening.

“The midfielder is still suffering from an injury sustained over the weekend that prevents him from playing in the matches against Spain.”

At the center of Slot’s midfield for Liverpool, Gravenberch has had a fantastic season. He has featured in 41 games across all competitions, starting all 29 Premier League games.

Gravenberch had spent his first season at Liverpool on the periphery of the squad under Jurgen Klopp after signing in 2023.

In order to fill a void in his team, Slot moved the former Ajax and Bayern Munich midfielder into a No. 6 position.

Even though the demands of the season had seemed to be getting to Gravenberch in recent weeks, his performances at the center of midfield have been a major factor in Liverpool’s 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with nine games remaining.

He completed the full 120 minutes in the Champions League last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, prior to being substituted after 74 minutes of the Wembley defeat to Newcastle.
