Liverpool Keen On Signing Former Man United Goalkeeper

Liverpool are trying to strengthen their goalkeeping department by signing former World Cup champion Ron-Robert Zieler.

This deal may be handled by the Reds’ expected new sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke.

In 2009, Schmadtke was appointed sporting director of the German club, Hannover 96. And one of the first big signings he made was 34-year-old Ron-Robert Zieler who was just 20 at the time.

Sir Alex Ferguson had recruited him for the youthful squad in 2005, and in 2008, he was promoted to the senior team. After a stint in Manchester, Zieler returned to his native country, Germany.

According to Bild, should Schmadtke move to Anfield, Liverpool would be interested in signing the seasoned goalkeeper to fill in for the Brazilian No. 1 Alisson Becker.

Caoimhn Kelleher, Liverpool’s No. 2 right now, is reportedly on the brink of leaving the club amid interest from Tottenham, Brentford, and Brighton. After only making 20 appearances in his five years in red.

Zieler was Joachim Low’s backup goalie when Germany won the World Cup in 2014. He has prior Premier League experience after joining Leicester in 2016 after the Foxes won the league.

However, his time overseas was sporadic. Following his first season at the King Power, he was soon transferred to VfB Stuttgart.

Zieler has only one year left on his contract which was triggered by Hannover in March of this year.

The short-term nature of the modification made to Zieler’s existing contract is rumored to have left him unsatisfied. And may make it simpler for Liverpool to wrestle the goalkeeper away from Stefan Leitl’s team.
