Liverpool Look Towards Laliga For First Summer Signing

Liverpool are reportedly keen on Real Sociedad midfielder, Martin Zubimendi and are ready to make him Arne Slot’s first acquisition as a Reds boss.

The midfield player’s contract contains a £51 million release clause, which Liverpool could activate if Slot determines he wants to sign the 25-year-old.

According to The Independent, Zubimendi has been a target as well as a late replacement for Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. He was impressive for Spain in the 2024 Euro final coming off the bench after Rodri was hurt.

Liverpool failed in their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, who both joined Chelsea, and instead sold their two veteran defensive midfielders to Saudi Arabian teams last summer.

Instead, they acquired Wataru Endo, who played in 43 games the previous season but whose future is in doubt following Liverpool’s rejection of Marseille’s proposal for him.

Furthermore, Tyler Morton will be allowed to depart after Thiago Alcantara was released in the summer before opting to retire. In the preseason, Slot has fielded Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai in the defensive midfield position. Other alternatives in the area include Alexis Mac Allister and Stefan Bajcetic.

Although neither Curtis Jones nor Joe Gomez are naturally suited for playing such role, they were also deputized in that role last term.

The only Premier League side without a summer addition is Liverpool, as Slot has evaluated the team that Jurgen Klopp left behind.

With 187 matches under his belt, Zubimendi has been a mainstay for Sociedad over the past four seasons. Helping the team qualify for the Champions League in 2022–2023. He has ten international appearances for Spain.
