Liverpool manager Arne Slot is about to miss out on his second transfer target in two days, as French wonderkid Mathys Angely joins Wolfsburg. The Reds are reportedly pursuing the adolescent, who is leaving Bordeaux after being demoted to semi-professional football.
Financial problems have pushed France’s sixth-most successful club into the third tier, with Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) backing out of a purchase proposal to seal their fate late last month.

Angely’s departure was inevitable from that point forward, as the 17-year-old defender already had senior experience and caps for France Under-17s. According to Le Parisien, Liverpool and Lens are among his admirers, but the teenager is poised to sign with Wolfsburg after a physical.
The Reds’ latest transfer failure comes only one day after long-term midfield target Martin Zubimendi turned down their advances to remain with Real Sociedad.
A new deal with greater earnings was enough to persuade Zubimendi to stay with his childhood club, leaving Liverpool as the only Premier League club yet to make a signing this summer.
Zubimendi, who had previously been linked with Arsenal, performed admirably in the Euro 2024 final as Spain defeated England to win the title. Slot has plenty of high-quality midfield options, including Alexis Max Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool’s pre-season ended with a goalless draw at home to Las Palmas, after which Slot explained: “As a club like ours, we are always searching for methods to strengthen the squad, but it is not easy to do.
“I said many times before that I inherited a tremendously great team, and if we can and believe it is possible, we will strengthen the squad.
