Liverpool Set To Open Contract Talks With Below-Par Forward

Liverpool are reportedly ready to open contract talks with Diogo Jota when the season ends.

In recent months, the footballer has been linked to a move to Saudi Arabia. According to a Football Insider as reported by Caught Offside, Liverpool will begin contract negotiations with the player at the end of the current campaign.

The Reds will also begin negotiating a new contract with Luis Diaz and Ibrahima Konate. Given how crucial both players have been to the team this season, it is not surprising that Liverpool want to retain them for the long-term.

Jota has suffered with recurrent injury issues and has been largely unimpressive this season. The 28-year-old player is unlikely to improve. This might have been Liverpool’s chance to take advantage of him and get a younger player.

Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have already signed contracts with Liverpool. It’s unexpected, though, that Jota was given a new deal.

The Portugal international has not been able to play at a high level this season, and it is obvious that he is declining.

Jota only has six league goals this season despite earning £140,000 a week. Liverpool ought to reevaluate their choice to extend their contract with him in the summer.

He has undoubtedly been a valuable member of the team over the past few seasons, but the soon-to-be Premier League champions should move on from him and bring in a replacement when the summer transfer window opens.
