Liverpool Sign Carvalho From Fulham In An £8 Million Transfer

Liverpool have completed the £8 million ($10 million) transfer of Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho, according to GOAL
Following the end of his contract with the newly promoted Cottagers, the 19-year-old will join Liverpool on July 1.

Liverpool paid an initial £5 million ($6.2 million) for him, with an additional £3 million ($3.7 million) in performance-related add-ons. The Reds also included a 20% sell-on clause in the contract.

How Did Liverpool Land  Carvalho From Fulham?

Liverpool looked to sign Carvalho in January, reaching an agreement with Fulham around 6 p.m. on the final day of the transfer window.

He was expected to stay at Fulham for the rest of the season, but Liverpool were unable to finish the necessary paperwork before the 11pm deadline, thus the deal fell through.

Despite this, Anfield sources believed Carvalho would end up on Merseyside. Following Harvey Elliott’s acrimonious departure to Liverpool in 2019, Michael Edwards, the outgoing sporting director, and his replacement, Julian Ward, have worked hard to mend fences with Fulham.

Ward has a good working relationship with Fulham manager Marco Silva and chief executive Alistair Mackintosh, and Liverpool are said to be impressed with the manner Mackintosh and Tony Khan, the Cottagers’ vice-president, handled the negotiations.

The transaction that brought Harry Wilson to Craven Cottage last summer improved relations, and Liverpool permitted Neco Williams to join on loan at the end of January. Both were crucial in Silva’s team’s promotion to the Premier League.

What Role Will Carvalho Play At Liverpool?

Carvalho has already made an impact in the Premier League, appearing four times and scoring once during the 2020-21 season.

This season has been his true turning point. He has been a fixture in Silva’s lineup, scoring 11 goals in 38 games across all competitions and earned his first call-up to the Portugal U21 squad.

He can play in almost any attacking position, although Liverpool insiders believe his best roles are off the left flank or as a No 10.

Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, and Paris Saint-Germain are among the clubs that have expressed interest in him.

He has already visited the AXA Training Centre with Fulham’s permission to conduct a medical and speak with Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff, and is said to be preparing for pre-season, when he will join up with his new teammates.

Carvalho, who has been at Fulham since the age of 12, qualifies for ‘home-grown’ status in the Premier League.

He’ll join Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Kaide Gordon, and Tyler Morton, all of whom are 23 or younger, as part of an exciting core of emerging young players at Anfield.
