Liverpool “strongly advise” against Klopp’s calls for 100,000 Reds fans to flood Basel

Liverpool have urged their fans not to take the advice of Jurgen Klopp, who encouraged fans to travel to Basel for the Europa League final even if they did not have tickets.

The Reds qualified for the final against Sevilla on Wednesday, 18 May, following last Thursday’s 3-1 aggregate victory over Villarreal in another successful European night at Anfield.

However, the club have only been allocated just 10,236 tickets for the game taking place at St. Jakobs-Park in Basel, which has a capacity of only 35,000.

Asked for his thoughts on the decision to hold the showpiece event in such a low-capacity stadium, Klopp urged fans to travel to Swiss city no matter what and create a special atmosphere for the team.

“We go to Basel. We take, I don’t know, 50, 60, 70,000 Liverpudlians with us. Not in the stadium, but in the city — maybe 100,000,” he told post-match reporters. “It is a nice city by the way, close to my home.

“Go there, create an atmosphere and let’s do our best again. It’s well deserved and we’re really, really pleased with all the boys.”

Following consultations with Uefa, Liverpool have issued a statement advising fans unable to acquire tickets against travelling to Basel on the day of the game.

“Following meetings with Uefa and the Local Organising Committee in Basel on Friday, LFC is strongly advising fans not to travel to Basel unless they have an official match ticket,” read the statement.

Uefa previously released a notice to fans to the same effect.

Liverpool also explain that transport will be restricted and that all accommodation close to the stadium is sold out.
