Liverpool’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen player Florian Wirtz has been thwarted, with Manchester City also allegedly keen in signing the dynamic playmaker. The Germany international is unlikely to go in January, but a summer transfer is not out of the question.
Over the summer, Jurgen Klopp oversaw a thorough rebuilding of his midfield ranks, allowing numerous veteran stalwarts to exit and be replaced by younger players. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner were among those that left, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita also allowed to leave as free agents.

Liverpool then strengthened their midfield with the additions of Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo, all of whom have fit in well with Klopp’s side. Despite the makeover, the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager is eager to add at least one new midfielder to his squad soon.
Wirtz of Leverkusen is one of the candidates at Anfield, with the playmaker widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising prospects. However, the Reds are not alone in their desire, with 90min suggesting that City are also interested in signing the 20-year-old.
Bayern Munich are also interested in signing the versatile midfielder, although Wirtz has already stated that he would like to play Premier League football in his career, which may be an opportunity he seeks sooner rather than later.
