Jurrien Timber has been warned by Louis van Gaal that joining Manchester United during the World Cup may not be the best idea.
Erik ten Hag, the new Red Devils manager, is hard at work behind the scenes to secure his first signing since taking over for Ralf Rangnick at the end of last month. And the Dutchman has a lot to accomplish after inheriting a United team that is coming off its worst Premier League season ever.
Ten Hag is running the rule over his playing staff during his first few weeks in the post before considering which changes he needs to do quickly to turn their fortunes around. His first window is expected to be hectic, with upgrades planned all the way down the team’s spine.
Timber, who was a key member of Ajax’s title-winning team under Ten Hag, has been extensively linked with a move, with reports stating that United has already made contact with his current club. Timber, who is only 20, can play as a center defender as well as a fullback, giving him an obvious edge on a team that is lacking in so many areas.
Timber may cost United more than £40 million, according to the Guardian, with Ajax still negotiating a new contract with the defender. According to reports, the player has misgivings about the move because he would be joining a side that will not compete in the Champions League next season.
Timber is presently on international duty with the Netherlands and is expected to play a role in the Oranje’s match against Wales on Wednesday night in Cardiff. And, ahead of the Nations League match, former United manager Van Gaal has questioned whether he needed to transfer to England at this early early of his career.
“I think a player with his qualities can play in the Prem. That’s not a problem,” Van Gaal said. “But the question is whether he has to take this major step now.”
When asked what would happen if he didn’t get enough playing time at Manchester United, he said, “Then he’s not that wise, I suppose.” He has to play.”
