Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has confirmed that will leave the club at the end of the season.
It was widely believed that the Spaniard would depart the Nou Camp after this term was out after Barcelona were hammered 4-0 by Paris St Germain last month, effectively ending their Champions League campaign at the earliest stage since 2007.
“I won’t be Barcelona coach next season,” he told a press conference after his side’s 6-1 win over Sporting Gijon.
“The way I do this job is why I have to leave. There are very few hours to rest. I need to rest.
“I want to thank club for their confidence, and the players for their dedication and professionalism.”
Luis Enrique guided the Catalan giants to the treble in his first season in charge and a league and cup double in his second year. However Barcelona have struggled to keep pace with Real Madrid in La Liga this term.
Sevilla manager Jorge Sampaoli is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed Luis Enrique. Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with the job but the former Espanyol defender laughed off claims of interest last month.
