Luka Modric Signs One-Year Contract Extension With Real Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has signed a new one year contract that will keep him at the club until 2024.

The 37-year-old was set to become a free agent at the end of June and was anticipated to receive massive offers from teams in Saudi Arabia.

At one point, it was claimed that Modric was considering leaving the Spanish capital to join the Saudi Pro League, with Jude Bellingham’s arrival creating competition for slots in Carlo Ancelotti’s engine room.

However, Real have now confirned that the former Tottenham Hotspur man has turned down offers from the Middle East to sign a one-year deal at the Bernabeu.

Modric’s new contract will keep him at Real Madrid until shortly before his 39th birthday, extending his successful spell at the club since his £30m move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

Modric has scored 37 goals and assisted 77 times in 488 games for Real Madrid since arriving in the Spanish capital, and he has remained an important cog for Ancelotti in his latter years.

Last season, the Croatian international provided six goals and six assists in 52 games, including 19 starts in La Liga and nine in the Champions League.

Modric also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Copa del Rey with Los Blancos, but he was only a substitute in the latter.

Modric’s two trophies last season brought his total to 23 since joining Real Madrid, which includes five Champions Leagues, five Club World Cups, three La Liga wins, and four Supercopa de Espana crowns.

Modric’s deal comes after Real Madrid signed Toni Kroos to a new one-year contract, as the duo prepares to compete for midfield minutes with new addition Bellingham.
