Madrid break Spanish-club record as they extend unbeaten run to 40 games

Real Madrid made history on Thursday night as they surpassed Barcelona‘s Spanish-club record unbeaten run, reaching 40 games.

Zinedine Zidane’s men secured a dramatic 3-3 draw at Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, progressing through to the next round 6-3 on aggregate, but Karim Benzema’s injury-time equaliser was much more important than that. Los Blancos are now unbeaten in their last 40 fixtures in all competitions, passing Barcelona’s previous record of 39.

Real’s last defeat came all the way back in April last year, as they lost 2-0 at Wolfsburg in the Champions League quarter-final first leg. Since then they’ve won 30 and drawn 10 of their next 40 games, breaking a Spanish-club record that was only set last season by their fiercest rivals.

In amongst those results was their famous victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final at the San Siro last season, as they lifted their 11th European crown. Now Zidane’s men will be targeting the all-time European record of 43 games unbeaten, set by Juventus in the 2011/12 campaign under Antonio Conte.

However that fantastic run hadn’t come closer to its end than on Thursday evening, as Sevilla gave Real an almighty scare at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.

Zidane’s men have scored 45 goals and conceded 14 in their 16 La Liga fixtures this season, with a shot accuracy of 51%, as they sit top on 40 points, four ahead of Sevilla in second and five clear of Barcelona in third.

Next up for them is another away trip to Sevilla this weekend, before taking on Malaga at the Bernabeu.
