Mainoo ‘Doesn’t Know Where To Play And Isn’t A Great Athlete’ – Scholes

Paul Scholes is worried about Kobbie Mainoo’s position in Ruben Amorim’s team, implying that Manchester United are not sure how to use the midfielder.

Mainoo earned a ticket on the plane to Germany with Gareth Southgate’s England team at the European Championship last summer after emerging as one of the few bright sparks in a struggling United squad.

He was nominated for the Golden Boy award, which is given to the finest young player in Europe’s top five leagues, after his remarkable rise, and he soon established himself as one of Old Trafford’s most valued assets.

However, he has had to deal with a mix of injury issues and the typical issues that come with a manager change this season.

He has struggled to establish the same level of consistency that he did at the close of the previous season. So, Amorim has recently asked him to play a number of roles, including as a striker against Crystal Palace.

According to the Daily Mail, Scholes said the player appeared to be “lost” at the moment before drawing comparisons to Declan Rice, a standout for Arsenal.

What Did Scholes Say About Mainoo?

“I think Mainoo is lost,’ Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate.

“I’ve talked about Declan Rice being lost before – I think Mainoo is lost as well. They don’t know what to do with him.

“I don’t think he knows where to play on a football pitch because he’s been played in one of the number 10 positions, he has been played in the two in the midfield, which I can see probably doesn’t suit him because I don’t think the greatest athlete.

“He’s a great footballer. I think the No 10 does suit, (but) the false nine, never in a million years.”
