England batsman Dawid Malan admits he let himself down after failing to build on a strong start in the defeat to New Zealand. The Black Caps beat England by 21 runs to level the Twenty20 series at 1-1 in Wellington, with Chris Silverwood’s men wasting several chances in the field. New Zealand set England a target of 177, with Jimmy Neesham hitting 42 off 22 deliveries and Martin Guptill firing 41. England fell to 3-2 after just eight balls and were eventually bowled out for 155, despite Malan’s 39 and Chris Jordan’s 19-ball 36. Malan had looked dialled in, and the Middlesex ace says he should have done better. He told Sky Sports: “Every opportunity is a chance for someone like me. Myself, Vincey [James Vince] and Sam Billings have been around the squad for four years and waited a long time for these opportunities which have been few and far between “For us, when we do get an opportunity, it’s about scoring runs that win games of cricket. That’s why I’m a bit disappointed. “The timing of when I got out was poor. It was a crucial period. If I had batted for another three or four overs, I could have potentially won this game. “It’s not just about getting 30, 40 or 50 – winning the game is what counts.”
