Former Tottenham Hotspur and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper, Paul Robinson has tipped Manchester City to receive up to 70-point deductions if they are found guilty of their 115 Premier League breaches.
Robinson maintains that in order to create a “precedent” and hold other teams accountable if they are also found guilty of financial offenses, the Premier League must follow through Everton’s 10-point penalty.
In February, City were accused of 115 financial rule violations spanning from the 2009–10 to the 2017–18 season. Since the case was forwarded to an independent panel, no further details have been made public.
Sean Dyche’s Toffees, however, were docked 10 points after an independent commission deemed them guilty of their own infractions.
Although the sanction is already the largest in Premier League history. There are worries that City may receive even worse punishment than their rivals in the league.
The league leaders are reportedly “very confident” of being found not guilty, according to Football Insider as cited by Teamtalk. But Robinson believes they may be in for a very unpleasant shock.
What Did Robinson Say About Man City’s Potential Points Deduction?
Speaking to Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast, the former England international said: “I think this is important now. There’s got to be continuity.
“If only Everton are punished, then they’ve been hard done by. They’ve been kicked with a 10-point penalty.
“They’ve been hauled up in front of the jury, a lot quicker than those who are already ‘on trial’ – if you like.
“All of a sudden, the Premier League might look at Everton’s punishment and decide that if they’ve been given ten – we could be looking at 50, 60 or 70 points for Man City on that basis.
“The Premier League have set a precedent now, so if that deduction stands, they’ve got to follow through with other clubs.”
