Man City Fear Ilkay Gundogan Could Leave On Free Transfer

Ilkay Gundogan is yet to sign a new deal with Manchester City and the club fears he could leave the club for free when his contract expires next summer.

The 32-year-old has spent the last six and a half years at the Etihad Stadium and was named the club’s new captain at the start of this season when Fernandinho left.

Gundogan remains a first-team regular under Pep Guardiola, having started 12 of the Citizens’ 15 games this season across all competitions.

However, speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future at the Etihad lingers, with the German able to discuss pre-contract agreements with international clubs from January.

Football Insider reports that Man City have spoken to Gundogan’s agents about extending his contract, but no agreement has been reached.

Barcelona, Juventus, and Bayern Munich have all been linked with Gundogan, but the latter are said to have dropped out of the contest.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray are the latest team to express interest in the Turkish-born midfielder, who recently confessed that a move to the SuperLig is being considered.

“Because of my roots, Turkey is naturally interesting. I also like the USA, I’ve been there on vacation several times,” Gundogan told Sport1.

On his contractual situation with Man City, Gundogan continued,  “I’m not worried about that at the moment. I still have a contract in Manchester until 2023, I’m very happy there, both in sporting and private terms, and I can theoretically imagine ending my career with City.”

Gundogan was Man City’s first acquisition under Guardiola in 2016, and the Spanish boss recently praised the midfielder, describing him a “joy” to work with.

Gundogan has appeared in 269 games for City in all competitions, scoring 51 goals and assisting on 34 others.
