It is believed that City has contacted its Portuguese colleagues and is currently negotiating a fee.

Gonzalez, a 23-year-old who attended Barcelona’s academy, has made 29 appearances this season and has seven goals and six assists.

The Spain Under-21 player can play a variety of midfield positions, which is an important position City is trying to strengthen without Rodri, reports Mail Online.

Super agency Jorge Mendes represents Gonzalez, who has a release clause worth almost £50 million, although City is trying to negotiate a cheaper price.

Atalanta’s Ederson has been of interest however the Italians are hesitant to deal their prized asset mid-season, while Douglas Luiz at Juventus is available.

Opening talks with Porto is an indication that City is not finished with the window and wants to re-energize their campaign by signing the four new players, as Mail Sport disclosed last month.

Man City have already added Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis in recent weeks; a further addition would bring City’s total spending to above £150 million.
