Manchester City allegedly want to buy Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton in January following Rodri’s season-ending injury.
Wharton joined Palace from Blackburn Rovers in January and has impressed in his short stint at the club.
His performance in the second half of last season won him a spot on Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championship.

Despite the Eagles’ terrible form in 2024/25, the 20-year-old has started the season strong.
In six Premier League games, Wharton has made 1.3 crucial passes, 1.2 interceptions, 2.2 tackles, and 1.3 clearances per game.
Such is the nature of the beast, Wharton is allegedly a transfer target for several major Premier League clubs, and if Palace’s bad run continues, he may look to move elsewhere during the winter transfer window.
Manchester United and Liverpool have both been connected with the England midfielder, but Premier League champions Manchester City may make a play to sign him in January.
Wharton and Ederson are on Manchester City’s transfer wishlist following Rodri’s injury.
According to CaughtOffside, Pep Guardiola’s side is ‘weighing whether or not to sign cover for Rodri’, who has a torn ACL and could be sidelined for up to a year.
If the Spanish manager is allowed the finances to recruit a new No. 6, he has identified Wharton and Atalanta’s Ederson as his ‘two key midfield targets’.
However, City claim they ‘won’t panic and rush into the market’ to replace Rodri.
The champions have’stepped up their attempts to watch Ederson’, however, and have’sent scouts to Atalanta games to keep an eye on his performances’.
The source goes on to say that Wharton is a ‘City-like’ player with ‘long-standing interest’ from title rivals Liverpool.
Guardiola is said to ‘prefer’ Ederson over Wharton, but City will become’serious suitors’ if they cannot reach an agreement with Atalanta.
The Citizens may be hampered by Atalanta’s summer transfer of Teun Koopmeiners to Juventus, with Gian Piero Gasperini undoubtedly unwilling to lose another talented midfielder.
Ederson, a Brazilian playmaker, was a crucial part in the Serie A club’s Europa League victory last season and has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in recent years.
