A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after stabbing a 20-year-old footballer at a house party in Digbeth, Birmingham in June 2023.
On Monday, January 15, at Birmingham Crown Court, Gurveer Bhandal, of Giggety Lane in Wombourne, Staffordshire, was found guilty of murderously stabbing football player Ashley Day and was handed down a 13-year prison sentence.
The apartment at Bradford Street was rented by the 20-year-old as a celebration of his acceptance into the university.
According to ITV, Ashley invited his friends to felicitate with him over two nights on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 June. Bhandal was invited to the party by a mutual friend on the second night.
Ashley asked people to leave in the early hours of Thursday, June 29, in response to noise complaints. Then, Bhandal stabbed him three times in the back and chest as he hit the ground.
The knife, which Bhandal threw away as he fled the apartment, was subsequently discovered at a nearby construction site.
The 19-year-old maintained his innocence during his trial in November. Claiming that he stabbed footballer out of self-defense. He was found guilty of manslaughter but not of murder.
Ashley’s family released a statement at the time of his conviction honoring their “loving boy.”
They said: “Ashley will be remembered for his joyous smile that always lit up the rooms he entered.

“His kind, caring and compassionate nature was shown through his warm love for his family and friends. Ashley was happiness. His well-mannered, warm aura always made you feel at ease whenever you were around him.”
