In 1968, Phipps began working for the Red Devils as a telephone operator before joining the club’s furniture.
On matchdays, she greeted important people to the Old Trafford directors’ box while working as a receptionist at Carrington during her 56-year tenure with United.
The team frequently referred to Phipps as the “heartbeat of United” due to her immense popularity.
In addition to famous players like David Beckham, she developed contacts with legendary club figures like Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson, with whom she was especially close, reports Talk Sport.
In 2023, Phipps reflected on her friendship with Ferguson, saying: “We always had excellent banter. Sometimes we would fight like brothers and sisters, with me yelling at him and him yelling at me, but it was always in good humor.
“If I had to describe him in one word I’d say: caring. When my husband passed away, he brought the players to the funeral.
It amazed me. He and Cathy Ferguson were so good with me.”
In a long tribute, Man United stated: “Everyone at the club who had the honor of knowing Kath will cherish her memory. She was a one-woman institution.”
