Man United Duo Miss Out As Southgate Reveals 23-Man England Squad Ahead Of Nations League

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho of Manchester United were left out of Gareth Southgate’s final England squad before the World Cup.

After contributing to three goals and two assists since Erik ten Hag’s arrival, Rashford was expected to make his international comeback.

However, neither he nor Sancho will play in the upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, after being dropped by Ten Hag, have retained their spots in the Three Lions team.

Southgate did hint at Rashford’s inclusion before long, saying: “There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time, but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved.

“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently.

“He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks. He of course will be under consideration.”

Following his strong early-season form under Antonio Conte, Eric Dier makes a return after a lengthy exile. Elsewhere, Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who is also eligible to play for Jamaica, got his first call-up.

Meanwhile, number one goalie, Jordan Pickford, misses out due to a thigh injury. Instead, Southgate names Dean Henderson, Nick Pope, and Aaron Ramsdale to be England’s three goalkeepers.

Southgate did not hold a press conference to announce his selections as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death.

England play Italy on 23 September in a repeat of the Euro 2020 final before facing Germany three days later. It will be Southgate’s team’s first game since a humiliating 4-0 loss to Hungary in June.
