Man United to face Fenerbahce in nightmare Europa League group

Manchester United will face former striker Robin van Persie after being paired with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho’s side were drawn along with Fener, Feyenoord and Zorya in Group A for the competition.

United sold Van Persie to the Turkish side, who finished second in the Super Lig last season, in July 2015 after three years at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils finished fifth in the Premier League last season and missed out on fourth place to rivals Manchester City, who this week qualified for the Champions League group stages.

As a result, Jose Mourinho’s star-studded eleven will be playing their football in Europe’s second-tier competition, with the Red Devils put into Group A on Friday alongside European giants Feyenoord and Fenerbahce, as well as Ukrainian minnows Zorya Luhansk who finished fourth in their league last season.

Elsewhere, West Ham crashed out of the Europa League qualifying stages on Thursday and their conquerers, Astra Giurgiu, are in the group stages alongside Viktoria Plzen, AS Roma and Austria Wien.

Meanwhile, Southampton will be in Group K alongside Serie A giants Inter Milan, whilst Sparta Praha and Hapoel Beer-Sheva are also involved.

Manchester United will be competing with some of Europe’s top sides for the top gong in the Europa League, with the likes of Zenit St.Petersburg, Schalke, Ajax, Inter Milan, Villarreal and Shakhtar Donetsk all present in the competition.
