It’s April Fools’ Day on Friday but Sir Alex Ferguson ‘s decision to publicly back Louis van Gaal has backfired like Bart Simpson’s Duff beer prank.
Many Manchester United supporters are angry by Ferguson’s comments, claiming they are an attempt to prevent Jose Mourinho from becoming the club’s manager. Ambassador Ferguson said in an interview with Sky Sports that United need to show ‘patience’ with Van Gaal, who has spent over £250m on a squad that is sixth in the Premier League and 16 points behind leaders Leicester.
United have been jettisoned from both European tournaments this campaign and were ejected from the League Cup by Championship club Middlesbrough.
A top four finish and FA Cup glory remain a possibility but, as Paul Scholes said, ‘Arsenal do that’.
Ferguson, who is understood to be opposed to the club appointing Mourinho and would prefer Ryan Giggs to succeed Van Gaal, also suggested Phil Jones’ absence had contributed to United’s sorry season.
Some think it’s time Ferguson even quit…
