Man United are mulling a deal for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez if contract discussions with David de Gea falter.
De Gea’s contract with the Red Devils expired at the end of June, making him a free agent.
Although negotiations for a new contract are still underway, it is believed that United wants the Spanish goalkeeper to accept a considerable wage drop from £375,000 to about £200,000 per week.
Man United will look elsewhere if De Gea doesn’t agree to a contract extension. Sanchez, a Spanish international who has slipped down the pecking order under Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and has previously referred to De Gea as his “role model,” is one prospective target.
With Bart Verbruggen’s arrival, Sanchez will find it even more difficult to make the team after losing his position to Jason Steele last season.
As reported by the Daily Mail, United are interested in signing Sanchez to replace De Gea if he moves on.

The Brighton man is a good passer of the ball – an attribute Erik ten Hag desires – and several clubs are expected to be after his signature this summer.
The biggest sticking point for United will be Sanchez’s price tag. Brighton reportedly want £30m for Sanchez, who has two years left on his contract.
That is a lot of money for someone who is now the third-choice stopper at his current employers.
