Man United Legend Doubles Down On Fernandes Claims About ‘Upsetting’ Teammates

Former Manchester United star, Paul Scholes has questioned Bruno Fernandes positional play following his side’s embarrassing exit in the UEFA Champions League.

After placing last in a group that included FC Copenhagen, Bayern Munich, and Galatasaray, the Red Devils are no longer in Europe. Their fate was sealed on Tuesday night after losing to Bayern, the winners of Group A, 1-0 at home.

Fernandes, 29, faced harsh criticism in the build-up to the game after receiving his fifth yellow card of the season in the 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. As a result, he will be suspended for this weekend’s crucial match at Anfield against bitter rivals, Liverpool.

After United’s loss to the German giants, Scholes singled out the captain of the team, making his already awful week even worse.

What Did Scholes Say About Fernandes Game Play?

He told TNT Sports as cited by The Mirror: “You almost think he’s trying to be a bit of a hero at times.

“You see him at left-back, you see at right-back, picking the balls up from the centre-halves. He’s trying these final passes all the time but I think he just needs to help his centre-forward more.

“If he actually plays his position properly and better, he helps the team – I think if I was playing with him and I wanted to link with him or play a one-two, I wouldn’t know where the hell he is. It’s up to people like Amrabat and McTominay to stay in their positions.”

Less than two weeks ago, he brought up a similar point regarding Fernandes’ tendency to wander all over the field during the 1-0 loss to Newcastle.

Speaking at the time, Scholes asserted that United’s formation was “upset” by this tactic.

He said previously: What position is he asking him to play? Where are you supposed to be on the football pitch? I see him as a No.10, it’s his best position as he can play a pass and he can get a goal.

“I don’t think that is healthy for the team. It upsets the formation and it upsets the way of playing.”
