Man United set to lose more than £20 million if they fail to qualify for Champions League

Manchester United are set to lose over £20 million in sponsorship income from kit sponsors Adidas if they are unable to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

United, who announced a fall in their first-quarter revenue today, disclosed that Adidas’ annual payment of of £750 million will reduce by 30 per cent if the club fail to get into Europe’s elite club competition.

The Red Devils are currently in the second campaign of a deal with Adidas that is set to last for ten years.

As reported by BBC Sport, United’s chief financial officer Cliff Baty said: “There is a clause in the Adidas contract that applies if we are missing from the Champions League for two years in a row.

“An example would be if we [were due to receive] £70m [in a given year], we would not receive £21m.”

United are only playing in the Europa League this season and have suffered financially as a consequence, while they face a battle to secure a top four finish as they are currently in sixth place in the Premier League table.

Jose Mourinho’s side, who have created 140 chances in the Premier League so far this season, host Arsenal on Saturday in an eagerly-anticipated encounter. A victory in that fixture would help to increase the belief that the club can get their campaign back on track and at least secure a top four finish.
