Arsenal and Manchester United are vying for Joan García’s signature. by Jit. February 28, 2025.
According to Spanish source Sport, Manchester United and Arsenal are both interested in signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan García.
After losing David de Gea and Dean Henderson, the Red Devils decided to overhaul their goalkeeping department by recruiting Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir ahead of last season.
The Cameroonian has been the first choice, while the Turkish international has been the backup. However, Onana had an error-filled rookie season last year and has continued to appear shaky this season.
Bayindir, on the other hand, has been unable to challenge Onana for the first-team berth and has been out in recent weeks due to an injury.

The player’s current contract includes a £25 million release clause, and Espanyol are willing to sell him for a low price. However, Arsenal is also in the running for the Spaniard, making the purchase difficult.
They made a formal approach to hire him last summer but were unable to reach an agreement in principle with the Catalan side. Despite failing to sign him the previous time around, Arsenal is still interested in signing the 23-year-old and has been in contact with his representation for about a year. So they’re ahead of United in this race.
In addition, PSG and Barcelona are also interested in him, but Espanyol have no intention of providing the Blaugrana a discount due to the rivalry between the race.
Garcia, who helped Espanyol achieve promotion last season, has been instrumental in his team’s pursuit for La Liga survival this season, keeping four clean sheets and saving 72%. He even maintained clean sheets against Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
Garcia is a gifted shot-stopper who, if signed by Arsenal or Manchester United, would be a wise investment. However, given David Raya’s presence at Arsenal, he may not be able to play consistently if he moves to the Emirates Stadium. As a result, the 23-year-old might be better off joining Manchester United than Arsenal.
