Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness says he’s not concerned about Thomas Muller‘s struggles in front of goal this season, insisting that it was only last year that Man United were ready to pay €100 million for him last year.
The German international, somewhat surprisingly, has found the back of the net just once in 15 Bundesliga appearances so far in this campaign and as a result, has come in for criticism in recent weeks.
Against Werder Bremen last weekend, Muller lasted until just after the hour mark before being substituted as he created just one chance, saw his only effort on goal blocked, but Hoeness says he’s not worried about his form.
“I am not worried about Thomas. Manchester United were ready to pay €100 million for him a year ago,” Hoeness told Sport Bild, as reported by Goal.
“But of course, I do hope that he will soon be an undisputed starter again. And I have no doubt that will soon be the case once more.
“In a normal situation, when Thomas is in form and high on confidence, he will always be a starter at Bayern. He is an absolute key figure for us.
“But I would obviously never put any pressure on the coach to play him.”
Playing in the Champions League has proven to be more fruitful for Müller so far this season as he’s netted twice in six appearances during the group stages and created a total of five chances for his teammates.
Muller will be hoping to retain his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI for this weekend’s clash with Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena as Bayern look to record an eighth successive victory in the league ahead of their meeting with Arsenal later this month.
