Man Utd’s Varela called up to senior Uruguay squad

Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela has been called up to Uruguay’s international squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Uruguay travel to Recife, Brazil on March 25th to face the Selecao in a crucial fixture as they bid to make the 2018
tournament in Russia, and United’s Varela will be part of the 23-man squad, according to their official website.

The 22-year-old will also be present in La Celeste’s home tie against Peru just four days later on March 29th.

Varela has been in impressive form since forcing his way into the United defence under Louis van Gaal. The Uruguayan first featured in December, playing 45 minutes in the Red Devils’ 0-0 draw with West Ham United at Old Trafford, and then played the full 90 minutes for their next fixture away at Bournemouth – though this ended in an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to the Cherries.

The youngster then didn’t make an appearance until the 3-2 win over Arsenal on February 28th, performing excellently in the win over Arsene Wenger’s side. The full-back put in an exquisite first time cross which led to Marcus Rashford’s first goal, as well as boasting an 87% pass accuracy, highlighting his value to the Red Devils’ attack.

Varela then played the full 90 minutes again in the win over Watford at the Theatre of Dreams, helping United keep a clean sheet and record their second league win in a row.

And Varela’s form has clearly not gone unnoticed at international level, with manager Oscar Tabarez calling up the defender to the national squad.

With the Copa America Centenario due to take place this summer in the USA, Varela will be hopeful of continuing his form for United in order to win his place at the historic competition in June, and based on current form the hot prospect will be difficult to displace from the starting XI.
