Julen Lopetegui reportedly stated he and his staff ‘were crying’ after they learnt he will be leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
The Spaniard was axed just three days before the start of the new season. And he was replaced by former Bournemouth manager, Gary O’Neil, who took over without pre-season action with the team.
According to Birmingham Mail, after taking a short break, Lopetegui is now prepared to resume work in an undisclosed league. And he has spoken out for the very first time about his feelings on leaving Wolves and the reasons underlying that decision.
The former Spanish footballer looks back favorably on his time at the Midlands club overall, and experiences an emotional exit.
“It was not easy for me,” Lopetegui told The Athletic. “It was a pity. I remember a lot of workers, and us too, we were crying.
“The environment and the commitment that we have created at Wolves in a short time is not normal. And I remember this with a big, heavy heart. This was special.”

When discussing his departure from the club, he said: “Something changed. And once things changed, more than I could have thought, it was then a case of deciding what to do.”
Lopetegui said that what happened is a question “for the club, not for me. They have their reasons and I respect all of their reasons. They decide what they want, but they can decide this and I can decide my future and my life.”
