Manchester United looked to welcome Alexis Sanchez during his home debut with a banner for himself and his golden retrievers Atom and Humber – only for the Old Trafford stewards to have other ideas.
The banner was unveiled just after the interval and soon caused a stir among supporters and pundits on social media.
And within minutes of its unveiling, the banner was withdrawn by a steward, much to the delight of some embarrassed supporters.
United were looking to respond to a midweek Premier League defeat against Tottenham at Wembley as Sanchez made his home debut since his January move from Arsenal.
After a quiet first half ended scoreless, one of the game’s most topical discussions arose when fans produced the banner which shows a photo of Alexis posing with his two dogs.
The Chile ace is very close to his pets and refers to them as his best friends with Atom and Humber gaining notoriety since their owner moved to Old Trafford.
The trio had a banner of their own at the Emirates during Sanchez’s time at the club but the removal suggests United plan not to follow suit.
However, the Chilean did have a reason to cheer as he scored his first goal for United.
