Manchester United Handed Boost In Cody Gakpo Pursuit

Man United transfer target Cody Gakpo has reportedly performed a U-turn on his intended move to Leeds United despite reports that personal terms had been agreed between both parties.

Gakpo has been strongly linked with a transfer to the Premier League in recent months, with Man United, Leeds, Southampton, and Everton among the clubs thought to have inquired about the forward during the summer window.

It was reported last week that Leeds had won the race to sign the 23-year-old and had accepted terms to bring him to Elland Road in January.

According to The Athletic, Gakpo has changed his mind and is no longer interested in the transfer after learning of interest from other clubs.

The Dutch international is thought to be optimistic that a successful World Cup campaign will boost interest in him and lead to a bigger transfer during the January window.

PSV are believed to demand at least £30m for the Netherlands international, however that amount could rise if Gakpo maintains his recent form all through to the World Cup in Qatar.

So far this season, the forward has actively contributed to 23 goals in just 16 appearances across all competitions, scoring 13 of his own and setting up another 10 for his teammates.

Only Man City striker Erling Haaland can match that statistic in world football from the 2022-23 season, making Gakpo one of the hottest assets ahead of the January window.

According to the report, his decision to back out of the Leeds contract could be great news for Man United, who were believed to be considering a bid for him during the summer before eventually signing Antony.
