Manchester United Manager Erik Ten Hag Explains How He Has Changed Scott McTominay’s Role

Scott McTominay feels Manchester United’s 2-1 success over Chelsea on Wednesday night was due to a new lighter training style.

McTominay, 26, was one of the star performers in United’s greatest performance of the season, scoring both goals to defeat the struggling Blues. And his match-winning effort couldn’t have come at a better moment for Erik ten Hag, who had been under a lot of pressure in the lead-up to the game.

Mirror Football exclusively reported earlier this week how numerous United players have grown disillusioned with the Dutchman, who has also been chastised for his hard training regime. McTominay, on the other hand, had nothing but love for Ten Hag following the Chelsea game and stated that training had been altered.

When asked what contributed to United’s improved mentality against the Blues, McTominay replied, “Obviously the manager, to be honest with you.” The way we approached the game, we did a lot of light training sessions to retain energy, freshness, and moving for the next game – because they come thick and fast. But for us, it’s a night to be proud of and one on which we can build.”

“We started really, really well in the game,” he said, “and obviously the fans are really happy with the way we started and reacted after a pretty abysmal performance against Newcastle, to be honest.”

Unsurprisingly, Ten Hag lauded United’s match-winner during his chat with club media after the game. He told the United website: “I think they [McTominay and Sofyan Amrabat] played very strong, very dynamic, very proactive, in and out of possession. They won a lot of duels together. Scott came in the right positions and scored two great goals.
