Manchester United Set To Axe 13 Stars In £100m Exodus To Boost Transfer Budget

This summer, Manchester United are set to do away with 13 players, five of whom are expected to be released, including club stalwart Phil Jones and academy product Axel Tuanzebe.

In order to complete the rebuilding Erik ten Hag started when he took over the club last year, Man United are finalizing its list of players who are expected to leave the club when the season comes to an end.

According to The Manchester Evening News, in addition to Jones and Tuanzebe, who are among those being released, up to eight more players may also be sold.

Both English defenders were seen as having the potential to become United legends, with Sir Alex Ferguson claiming that Jones may have been the club‘s “best ever player.”

Tuanzebe, meanwhile, was hailed as potential club captain. However, the 25-year-old has not played for the first team since the 2020–21 campaign.

Jones sustained another long-term injury this season, this time a knee issue that occurred on the first day of training under ten Hag and kept him out for the rest of the season.

In terms of recouping transfer fee, there will be three first-team players who the club will listen to offers for.

Eric Bailly, who returns from a loan spell with Marseille this summer, and club captain Harry Maguire, who has the potential to attract a decent transfer fee as a regular England international, both appear to have no future at United.

Furthermore, despite the progress and consistent playing time seen from the right-back this season, there is also expected to be a willingness to talk terms should there be an interest in Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The former Crystal Palace player’s £50m price tag may be recovered, though, and used to improve the rest of the squad.

Who Else Could Leave Manchester United?

The report also suggests that Anthony Elanga, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Brandon Williams and Alex Telles could all be pushed towards the door.

All of these players have years remaining on their contracts and could bring in transfer fees which could be reinvested, with a new striker believed to be the priority this summer as well as retaining Marcus Rashford.

Tom Heaton could also depart, with the England international’s contract expiring this summer. Although, the club have the option of an extension for the three-times capped goalkeeper.

The former Burnley and Aston Villa man made two appearances in the Carabao Cup earlier this season and could be asked to stay.

Among the club’s U21 ranks, Northern Ireland international Ethan Galbraith has been informed that he will be let go.

Ondrej Mastny and Charlie Wellens also being told the same.
