After experiencing an injury relapse earlier in the season, Manchester United player Phil Jones was said to be in “serious distress,” according to reports.
The latest injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez have thrust the England international into the spotlight. However, he is not registered to play in the Premier League and has yet to complete a single training session this season.
Some United fans have suggested Jones being an option to replace Varane and Martinez, with the club currently relying on Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to stay fit.
However, according to The Athletic, the England international won’t be returning to the field any time soon.
It’s claimed Jones, who played five times last season, isn’t registered in Erik ten Hag’s Premier League squad.
And though he’s able to play in the FA Cup, with the Red Devils due to lock horns with Brighton next weekend, the 31-year-old won’t be making an unexpected return. Jones hasn’t been able to complete a single Ten Hag training session all season and ‘is not considered an option’.

And that’s despite the 31-year-old working tirelessly during pre-season to ensure he could make his mark and fight for his future.
Unfortunately for Jones, he has been unable to get back to full fitness ever since. Though he’s tried various specialists over the years, the problem has persisted.
As well as the Premier League squad, he’s also been overlooked for the Europa League list as well.
