Manchester United advanced to the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic thanks to another impressive effort from Kobbie Mainoo.
And subsequently, fellow young teammate Alejandro Garnacho singled out the academy graduate for admiration. Mainoo, 18, has already made a dozen first-team appearances for Erik ten Hag, and Garnacho posted an Instagram story with a simple message in the form of emoji.
The Argentinean tagged Mainoo with star and boy emojis beside a picture of them both thanking supporters at full-time, a tribute to the moniker recently bestowed upon several breakthrough talents, notably Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

Ten Hag has previously stated that Mainoo’s age is irrelevant once he is capable of achieving results in games. “If you are good enough, you are old enough, and he proved that,” Ten Hag stated last month. “We’ll get even more enjoyment out of it as he becomes more accustomed to those games.” Because of his scanning and quickness, he can get such passes, three or four passes in, and switches in, and he is the man that can really harm opponents.”
Eight players from United’s youth participated on the DW Stadium turf, including veteran Jonny Evans. However, Ten Hag conceded that United should have scored more goals, but the outcome was more important.
“Winning the FA Cup is everything.” It’s a slam dunk. If [the tie] has to be replayed, it’s two games, but you want to finish the job, and that’s precisely what I said in the locker room: ‘Job done,'” Ten Hag remarked.
